Academic Support
Faculty Advisors: Guides and Advocates
At Bay each student works closely with a member of the faculty or administration who serves as his or her advisor and advocate in both academic and personal matters related to school life. In addition to getting to know each advisee personally, advisors are responsible for overseeing academic scheduling and monitoring academic progress in close collaboration with a student’s teachers. Advisors also facilitate student reports and parent teacher conferences.
Students meet each week during the academic day with their advisor in small advisory groups of six to eight students, and they are encouraged to schedule private meetings with their advisors as needed. Advisors also serve as an important link between school and home. Parents are invited to speak with their student’s advisor about any questions or concerns that they may have.
The Learning Services Program – Helping Everyone Learn
Diversity of learning and teaching styles is an important aspect of the inclusiveness embraced in the Bay School mission. Our guiding precepts inspire a kind and respectful community where different abilities and interests are valued, and mistakes are accepted as opportunities for learning and growth.
The Learning Services Program at the Bay School is based upon the premise that recognizing and accommodating learning differences within the classroom is synonymous with good teaching; all students benefit from learning strategies and teaching is strengthened. We do not offer individualized instruction or a dedicated tutoring center. However, the Director of Learning Services, Charles Roth, works directly with teachers and students to identify and implement best practices to individualize instruction without compromising the depth and rigor of the academic program.
The Learning Services Program is committed to:
- Insuring that the curriculum is accessible to all students.
- Encouraging students to become active and engaged learners.
- Empowering students to be effective self-advocates in communicating their learning strengths and needs.
- Partnering with families, faculty members, and deans to enact effective learning strategies.
- Anticipating and addressing students’ academic and emotional needs to build success and prevent failure by:
- Providing referrals to qualified and experienced evaluators, psycho-educational therapists, and homework tutors.
- Facilitating student use of learning tools that help to improve poor academic performance.
